The Association of British Drivers
Links to anti-car sites
We considered providing a detailed commentary specifically criticizing each of these groups, but then it was pointed out to us that they shoot themselves in the feet effectively enough already, without us painting targets on their toecaps.
Suffice to say that since the Berlin Wall came down, the anti-car lobby has become a magnet for every whinging nutcase with too much spare time on their hands.
| WARNING — MAY CONTAIN NUTS |
- Alliance Against Urban 4x4s
Dis-satisfied with the efforts of anti-car campaigners to convince the public that all cars are planet-destroying, child-killing monsters, this bunch are trying to whip up anti-4x4 hysteria. Don't think they won't be targetting your car next.
- Brake
A charity originally set up with the best of intentions, which have since been totally swept aside by anti-car fanaticism.
- CPRE
Supposedly the 'Campaign for the Protection of Rural England', they have actually encouraged English villages to be defaced by an excess of garish road signs, splatterings of red and green painted roads, and 'traffic calming' monstrosities.
- Living Streets
Formerly the Pedestrian's Association, they seek to impose maximum possible inconvenience on drivers.
- Reclaim the Streets
Described by some as 'the provisional wing of the anti-car lobby'.
An anarchist group behind the riots in London in May 2000 during which the cenotaph was vandalized.
- Slower Speeds Initiative
Seeking the return of the red flag act
- Transport 2000
A lobby group funded by public transport companies, they persuade politicians to oppose car use. No prizes for guessing why they do that.
- Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia
Take a look at their information sheet on 'UK Climate Indicators'. Note who the project was funded by, and see if you can find a more desperate attempt to find evidence to support a conclusion that was obviously decided beforehand.
