Nigel Humphries on calls to make hands-free use of mobile phones in cars illegal following a trucker who had been jailed for crashing into a line of traffic when talking on hands free. Nigel said that this vindicated the ABD's view that the existing law banning hand held phones was a bad law as holding the phone was the least of all potential mobile phone hazards well behind dialling/texting and being distracted by the conversation. He said that banning hands-free talk was ridiculous as you can`t legislate for distraction and you are much better off targeting the results of distraction with police. Also that talking on the phone was unlikely to cause sufficient distraction to cause someone to drive into a queue of traffic. |

Keith Peat on a lorry driver imprisoned for 4½ years after crashing into stationary vehicles whilst using a mobile phone, killing one person and seriously injuring others. Keith was responding to a proposal by RoSPA to ban hands free mobile phone use as well. He said the ABD is against additional and pointless micro management law when we already have adequate laws in place. He pointed out that the driver got 4½ years under existing law — what more of a deterrent can there be? Keith, a retired police traffic officer, then asked how were the police to police it unless people have red revolving lights on their cars when they are on the phone? And said that the hand held law wasn't even being effectively administered let alone an activity that no-one knows you are doing. |

Responding to Alisdair Darling's statement that it was essential to find an alternative and cheaper fuel, Hugh said that this just showed how out of touch the man is with reality. Most, if not all, the people living on low wages or fixed incomes (being retired) would be long dead before such a fuel was found. Hugh said that because his predecessor has spent every penny buying votes the country had no money left and he was desperately finding money wherever he can, mainly from the motorist. He could relieve the problem by reducing the fuel tax by 10p and would be no worse off than he was before the price shot up. |

Nigel said that at least this was properly targeted. The ABD approved of action being taken against people who speed outside schools when children were arriving and leaving — and it would not be credible either with the child or the driver to drag a child out of bed at 3AM or from their classroom to tell off a motorist for speeding when there were no children there. Nigel said however that he had concerns with children being used to punish adults over issues they understood poorly. He also expressed serious concerns about the effect on the children — they have a responsibility for road safey, too, and there was a danger that this scheme would undermine all the work done to get children to take responsibility for crossing the road by encouraging them to blame the driver. Then, of course, they would carry this attitude forward into cycling and driving. He ended by saying it was ironic that those who caused real danger to children were being allowed a way out of the ticket while those caught on dual carriageways with underposted limits were not. |
