Tony said that whilst we do not condone perversion of justice, most drivers held the mindless and rigid application of speeding law in utter contempt and felt entirely justified in taking whatever measures they could to protect themselves. This led to a discusson about cloning number plates and driving unregistered cars.
Tony likened this contemptuous attitude to that of the American public towards prohibition. A politically correct law forced through by a prudish and zealous minority, claiming the moral high ground and lacking any real support from the ordinary people. Consequently, no-one felt the least bit guilty about going to the local speakeasy or buying illegal booze from racketeers.
