WMD = GWT = SNAFU

The recent debacle over a government dossier on the existence or otherwise of WMDs in Iraq, together with the nature and immediacy of any potential threat arising, has many parallels with the manner in which climate change — or man-made global warming theory (GWT) as some would have it — is reported as a greater threat to the world than international terrorism: caused by mankind and curable by mankind.

This is not altogether surprising, as there are common processes at work, involving politicisation of previously neutral individuals and groups, as well as vested interests in particular viewpoints being foisted onto the public whilst opposing arguments and evidence are suppressed.

Parallels with the WMDs fiasco are clear. For regime change read climate change, for chief spies read scientists, for dossier read IPCC report, for activists and propagandists read green pressure groups, for the USA read the UN or EU, and so on.

In both scenarios, powerful, influential, unelected third parties are permitted to steer policy-making unchecked. The consequences in both cases are very serious; but while one is largely a matter for historians, the other is very much of the present as it concerns our future survival in economic as well as physical terms.

Will the same mistakes be allowed to happen again? They are happening now, but it's not too late to call a halt and so prevent them from leading this nation and others further down the path of self-delusion. Global warming is now all about politics: ideology, control, trade and tax. Science and the environment are nowhere.

WMDIn that infamous dossier, evidence was given more weight than it could bear.
GWTIn global warming, the Oregon Petition — signed by 18,000 scientists world-wide — states:
"There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate."
Yet policies with enormous economic and social consequences have already been introduced, on wholly inadequate evidence. Carbon dioxide levels have been18 times higher than now, and temperature shifts of several degrees (not tenths as now) have happened in the space of a human lifetime, several times, long before cars & factories existed.
WMDContents of the dossier were spiced up by politically motivated word changes
GWTAccording to Prof. John Christy, world-renowned climatologist and IPCC lead
author, the scariest scenario in the third annual IPCC report was added at a late stage of the review process "at the request of a few governments" — yet the report, as always, was presented as originating wholly from scientists.
WMDThe 45 minute WMD deployment capability issue was used to scare parliament and the public into supporting dramatic and costly action.
GWT
"We have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts we may have. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest."
Stephen Schneider, quoted by Dixy Lee Ray in 'Trashing the Planet', 1990

Clearly this advice from somebody who, only a few years before, issued warnings of an imminent ice age, has been taken to heart by self-proclaimed environmentalists who use emotive terms such as 'climate wrecker' and 'global warming villain' to steer the debate away from the science and towards crude propagandist slurs.
WMDThe 45 minute WMD deployment capability claim was wrong
GWTProjections for a 6 degrees C warming by 2100 years are pure fantasy, according to IPCC Lead Author Prof. Christy. Between 1980 and 2000 the atmosphere cooled, in spite of continued growth in carbon dioxide emissions.
WMDIn addressing regime change it is asserted that 'we did the right thing'
GWT
"We've got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing."
Tim Wirth, former US Senator.
WMDDebate about the existence of WMD (and actions to be taken) was restricted, an inner circle outside Cabinet was involved, and dissenting voices were vilified to the extent that one person involved took their own life.
GWTJohn Christy notes that, at one of the meetings held prior to publication of the third IPCC report, serious concerns were raised by other scientists about the 'pet theory' of the group leader — at which point the discussion was halted.
WMDPolicy makers appeared to have a quasi-religious commitment to action.
GWTIt has been said, by those working with the IPCC, that there are more 'true believers' in climate science circles than in religious circles.
WMDDocumentation released as non-political — in order to carry more weight — was in fact political.
GWTThe IPCC report 'summary for policymakers' is described as
very much a children's exercise of what might possibly happen, prepared by a peculiar group with no technical competence.
Dr. Richard S. Lindzen, Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology, MIT Technology; and IPCC Lead Author
yet is portrayed as science.
WMDPressure on media organisations to report the 'government line' and avoid critical coverage sought to create a one-sided debate and suppress criticism
GWT
"Activists have learned to dismiss those whose argument they cannot counter by attacking their integrity, thereby warning off not only other researchers, but warning off other journalists not to cover those stories."
David Murray, in 'Media Coverage and Global Warming: Is There a Problem?' 1997.
WMDHighly qualified and respected individuals were seduced by politicians with a large majority and a propensity for politicising the civil service…before and after their promotion
GWT
"The problem we are faced with is that the meteorological establishment and the global warming lobby research bodies which receive large funding are now apparently so corrupted by the largesse they receive that the scientists in them have sold their integrity."
Dr Piers Corbyn, Meteorologist, 'Weather Action' bulletin, December 2000
"Global warmers predict that global warming is coming, and our emissions are to blame." "They do that to keep us worried about our role in the whole thing. If we aren't worried and guilty, we might not pay their salaries. It's that simple."
Nobel Prize winner Kary Mullis
WMDOther nations remained wary of the basis for action over alleged WMDs.
GWT
"We had doubts about the Kyoto Protocol, we wanted reasoning from our partners in the European Union, in the IPCC. Formal requests had been sent to these organizations. But we have not received responses yet, which suggests that no coherent answers can be offered. What we hear is 'it is not comprehensive responses that matter, we will not give them anyway; what is important is whether you believe us or not',"
Andrey Illarionov. Aide to Vladimir Putin
WMDThe dossier was based partly on an ageing PhD thesis.
GWTThe NASA scientist who lit the blue touch paper of the global warming firework with his congressional testimony along the lines of Tim Wirth's "the science is settled" (it is not) has turned the flame off 14 years later. There is now no reason for the American administration to go along with the Kyoto protocol, says Dr James Hansen.
WMDThe model outcomes sought involved a stable nation state and less terrorism
GWTTo generate a full model of the climate system covering all spatial scales, and then use it to run a 50 year projection into the future, would take more than 10 to the power of 34 years of supercomputer time, according to Dr Willie Soon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics. This timescale is 10 to the power 24 times longer than the current age of the universe, which itself is about 10 billion years. Yet IPCC 'predictions' run to 100 years and are completed in rather shorter timescales — the simplifications, approximations and omissions responsible are also responsible for the IPCC storylines that emerge from climate models being useless. No emission reductions recommendations have a sound basis, and no policy should be based on them.

The impact — possibly the goal these days — of all this subterfuge is to sustain extortionate levels of taxation on transport (e.g. fuel duty on petrol) and industry (e.g. climate change levy on businesses) allied to high levels of central control over both, for purely political reasons.

"In the mid-Eighties the ultraleftists and extremists took over. After Greenham Common closed and the Berlin Wall came down these extremists were searching for a new cause and found it in environmentalism. The old agendas of class struggle and anti-corporatism are still there but now they are dressed up in environmental terminology."
Dr Patrick Moore, co-founder member of Greenpeace, May 2000

As stated to the ABD by a delegate attending an emissions trading conference in London:
Global warming isn't about the environment, it's about politics, trade and taxes.

Mobility and enterprise are suffering and, as a result, so is the economic ability of developed nations to address genuine environmental problems. The most surprising element of the whole GWT debate is that its green myths have survived for so long.

The antidote to information pollution is impartial scientific evidence. To read about peer-reviewed scientific research showing why reducing carbon dioxide emissions cannot possibly have any future impact on climate change, see our document: Carbon Dioxide — Cause or Effect?
