A45 Cameras Must Go!
The Association of British Drivers is demanding the removal of two speed cameras on the A45 between Coventry and Birmingham after the accident blackspot they were supposed to be protecting was removed.
 
Previous attempts to reduce accidents at the dangerous Packington junction where the B4104 and a minor road crossed the busy A45 dual carriageway near Meriden, had involved installing two speed cameras, but these had failed to achieve any reduction.
 
In June 1996 the government announced plans to replace the junction with a bridge and slip roads. The ABD welcomed this investment in road safety, and called for the cameras to be removed once the work was complete.
 
When the bridge and junction were opened in November 2002, the sign which was obscuring the westbound camera was removed - it had to be as it was a direction sign for the now removed junction. The cameras have also been painted yellow in response to Warwickshire joining the government's cash for cameras scheme.
 
ABD Spokesman Nigel Humphries said:
"The government assured the public that speed cameras would only be used in accident blackspots. They have spent £4.3 million on road engineering to remove the accident blackspot, yet the cameras are still there. These two cameras must be removed if the government wants the public to believe a single word they say about speed cameras."
ABD Chairman Brian Gregory said:
"The continuing presence of these two cameras proves that they are there purely to extort money from drivers, not to reduce accidents. This is not untypical of the inappropriate siting of speed cameras throughout the country."
