RSS News Feed

Users of Opera version 7.50 and above can simply click the RSS button below right to add ABD News to their newsfeeds.

What is RSS?
RSS originally stood for Rich Site Summary — though you'll see later variations such as Really Simple Syndication. It is a text file in XML format that is typically used to display content from another website on your own website. Most often this content consists of news — hence the Really Simple Syndication acronym.

The ABD currently provides an RSS News Feed listing our latest press releases.
The url for the feed is http://www.abd.org.uk/pr/abdpr.rss
You'll see the RSS button on the right used to indicate this feed elsewhere on our site.
(If you click it you'll just see unformatted text if your browser doesn't support RSS, in which case we suggest upgrading your browser to the latest version, or seeing if there is an add-on you can get to allow it to read RSS.)

You can go the whole hog by using PHP, but that's beyond the scope of this page.
Try searching Google for 'RSS PHP Magpie' for more information.

Here are some simpler options:

Displaying the RSS file directly in an IFRAME
Modern browsers* can display the RSS file directly.

*Tested with IE >= 6, Opera >= 7.54).
IE6 will show the text, but not provide clickable links, the background color is wrong, and also some background data is visisble.
Safari puts a menu in the frame, so you can't use a narrow frame.
Let us know if you find success with other browsers.

This technique uses an IFRAME to display our RSS file directly. The RSS file contains a link to a CSS file and javascript file which ensures you see the RSS file in a readable format with clickable links.

We suggest you make the IFRAME as wide (change WIDTH="...") or tall (change HEIGHT="...") as possible so people don't need to scroll.

FAQ

Can I change the format?
No. This works by the RSS file having a link to a stylesheet on our site.

How do I make the link open in a new window?
You have to secondary-click it and select open in new page/window, RSS hasn't evolved to do that itself yet …

FeedSweep
FeedSweep allows you to select from a number of different pre-defined styles, or offers advanced options to set the style yourself. The format provided below matches our website.

Note: Make sure you leave time off. The time shown by FeedSweep is not relevant, there is no time on our PRs, FeedSweep always says 5AM, perhaps because their server is 5 hours ahead of UK time.

(If 'no news' try refreshing the page)

Tip
To put the feed on the right of your page, just place the code into a TABLE with an ALIGN=RIGHT parameter.
