The Alliance of British Drivers (ABD) is appalled to learn that government minister Claire Perry has met with the extreme direct-action group known as Extinction Rebellion who are intending to bring London to a standstill this week (1). There really is no sensible point in pandering to far-left extremism by feeding a green monster that will never be satisfied until Capitalism has been ended and we are back in the stone age. Perhaps the meeting with Claire Perry is no surprise given that fellow attendee at Brasenose College Oxford, George Monbiot, once described her in his Guardian column (2) as “a firebrand who wanted to nationalise the banks and overthrow capitalism.” ABD Environment spokesman Paul Biggs said: “It’s high time that the Police got tough and dealt decisively with the costly disruption caused to the everyday lives of ordinary people thanks to political extremism thinly disguised as environmentalism. The ABD is not opposed to peaceful and legal demonstrations, but blocking major highways is not legal and the ABD have previously complained to Police Commissioner Cressida Dick about their lack of action on such events (3). Unscientific environmental alarmism is not a sound basis for government policy in a democratic society, which is why the ballot box is abandoned in favour of civil disobedience and criminality. In the UK it is democracy, truth, free speech and the rule of law that needs saving, not the Planet.” Governments need to spend less time listening to extreme groups and spend more time listening to those who promote cost-effective solutions to real global problems that can actually be solved.
